Camping – Brecon Beacons

This year, we’ve decided to start camping again.

Me and hubby used to go years ago and really enjoyed, so we decided we wanted to make camping memories with the boys.

Seven years ago we did take the oldest and middle children, when they were 6 and 1. It was a disaster! Tom, screamed all night long. I’m not sure whether it was the wind, or just that it was an unfamiliar environment, but he hated it. So, we’ve not been since!!

With our youngest now 5, we decided it was time, and he was old enough to understand what was happening, without panicking like Tom when he was a baby.

We went out and bought our new equipment, and a tent big enough to fit us all in.

We made our purchases from a mix of places; including the Go Outdoors and Halfords.

Myself and hubby decided to spend a night there first, a week or two beforehand, to test out the equipment.

Our tent is a Catalina 500 – which sleeps 5. It’s quite straight forward to pitch, but the hooks on the inside are quite stiff, but I’m sure these will get easier the more we use them.

We found a place in Brecon Beacons, which was pretty close to ‘wild camping’. There are no facilities on the site, just two portaloo’s and a tap with cold running water.

The price for the night was £5 per adult, with kids under 12 free, and dogs free. (Price correct at time of writing).

This makes it an incredibly cheap option, and really takes it back to basics. We decided this was perfect for their first real camping experience!

There is loads of space for the boys to run around and play games, and our dog Bobbi too!! There are also rope and tyre swings in some of the trees.

And with a view of Pen Y Fan and Corn du in the background, what more could you want?!

When we took the boys (just the youngest two this time), we took their football goals and a ball, a hoopla game, a nerf throwing toy, some books, paper and colouring pens.

One of their favourite parts of the evening was being sat outdoors, watching the sunset. It was such a beautiful experience.

We did want to light a fire with the boys like we did on our first visit, but understandably, with the weather being so warm, the grass was extremely dry, so the site has put a temporary ban on the fires, for the interest of safety.

The boys are sold! And want to go again as soon as possible. With the summer holidays starting next week, and the spell of good weather we’ve been having, we are hoping to get as much time camping as possible. We will definitely return to Brecon, but I will also be looking for other campsites to explore.

Another great point about the campsite is that you don’t have to book or pay in advance. There is plenty of space to a accommodate people, so as long as you let the owner know you are going on the day, that’s fine.

If you want to find out more information about the campsite, you can visit their Facebook page. Just search for ‘Brecon Beacons Wild Camping’. Their contact details are available on their Facebook page.

The postcode of the campsite is: LD3 8NN

No doubt we will be returning sooner rather than later.

Have you been to this site, or others you’d recommend in the area? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
